I bought this book because David Sedaris and Judy Blume--writers whom I greatly admire--gave it stratospheric blurbs. But most of the book is vapid--a sad exposé of a personality with almost no interests. I could imagine Judy Blume using Dunham as inspiration to create another "Sheila the Great"--it's harder to imagine why Sedaris likes Dunham so much. I liked Tina Fey's parody of Girls, which seemed to hit on the problem with Dunham's narrative and, for me, the problem of her hit series Girls: Dunham and the girls have no real interests and no real problems, apart from being bored and I would assume having been neglected as children. For all her apparent exhibitionism, Dunham's real problems seem masked. Other writers have done so much more with the same material: Daphne Merkin, for example. Dunham can write, but the popularity of her revelations continues to astonish me. When I think of the lives portrayed by Mary Antin, Maya Angelou, Betty Smith, Mary Karr, Jeannette Walls, Susannah Kaysen, Edwidge Danticat, Cheryl Strayed--women who had struggled and fought to overcome real problems--then I see the point of Tina Fey's "Blerta"--the Albanian refugee in Fey's send-up of Dunham's series. Blerta's had a real life and real problems. Dunham's wandered from one impulse to another, picking up HPV and despair along the way. Ugh.
I have read many many articles and reviews before ordering this book. Obviously, opinions differed but I could not get rid of the feeling that resentment was playing a big role in this. Yes, Lena Dunham got payed a nice amount by Random House for this book but does that mean it is not good? If certain reviewers took a neutral stand instead of subjectifying the whole book ("Oh, this whole book is about gross sex and Lena Dunham's vagina"), they would have seen that this is a well-written and honest (that depends on the reader, of course, if they believe the author is reliable) collection of essays. Dunham's writing, or at least some of it, is relatable to everyone. She dares to speak out/write what others think.I am not going to review the plot, that would be pointless. If you enjoy 'Girls', the series, you are likely to be happy reading 'Not that Kind of Girl'. If you are conservative, then probably not.
This book was really hit and miss. More miss than hit which is why I gave it two stars. There were some essays that really struck a chord with me but others seemed so self involved and not relevant. Mindy Kahling is still the best in celebrity books - hands down! As a gay man, and supporter of equality for all, I just felt like this was WAY too much. This book was clearly aimed for one market and one market specifically. I was really underimpressed. I know this isn't about Girls but with Girls being her platform I feel like she's excluded a lot of fans that will/want to read her book. It's not a terrible book by any means it's just not as good as I had hoped and I felt myself saying (quite a bit) "Ok, ok, ok, I get it. You're an overprivileged girl living in NYC with cool parents and you fear the world but fight for equlaity ok, ok ok. snnooooooze" I guess I was just missing the "meat"Again, there were some essays that stood out and I found poignant but not enough to impress me for the book as a whole.
A funny and smart book which makes you think about love, sex, relationships, ambition and career from a completely new angle. Lena has mastered her own way of expression. She is a delightfully quirky combination of an OCD-influenced artist and a young curious girls who wants to squeeze her experiences to the limits. Highly recommended.
Lena Dunham. I always thought it would be nice to live in Lenas head for a day, so this book is a nice taste of that. It's an easy read. Also the little drawings are fun to look at.
The book looks good and was delivered fast, I don't have any complaints. The book looks good and was delivered fast, I don't have any complaints.
This book is Amazing. Not that I just love Lena Dunham but her book is truly great. I'm so excited about every next page.
Full love for Lena Dunham. I'm grateful for what she has done for our generation of girls and women and I support her creative work with utmost respect.
